I woke up early. It was a good thing as I am back in hot desert weather. It was still quite cool. I drove to the North Entrance as the campsite is far from the road that goes through the park.
I first stopped at Oasis of Mara. It is located behind Oasis Visitor Center. It is a half-mile loop of boredom. I took some pictures of a cottontail.
I drove on Queen Valley road. I think I saw bobcats. It was so fast, but I am pretty sure they were felines of sort. It is my third time here at Joshua Tree, but it is still good to see Joshua trees and outrageous rock formations.
I walked to Barker Dam, where ranchers used to dam up waters for livestock. There were only one duck when I got there, but it was advertised for wildlife. On the way back, I got to see petroglyphs. It was awesome.
I went to Keys View next. I could drive to the top where I saw all around the park. It was nice, but where is the challenge. On the way back out, I hiked to Lost Horse Mine. It was starting to get warm. I am glad I took some water. It was a nice hike and I took some picture of the mine.
I was looking to go on Ryan’s Mountain. It is supposed to be about three-mile out and back trail. It was hard to do as it really heated up as I ascend the trail. It was a nice view of the park. It was especially nice payoff for the hike.
I stopped at the last visitor center, Cottonwood. I inquired with the ranger there about the last hike, Mastodon. It is another three-mile out and back trail. I was hastened about this one as it was almost two. It was really hot at this point. I thought things over while refilling water bottles and eating salty cheese and baguette. I could stay and do the last hike and see some other sights, but I did not want to stay in this hot desert another day. I gather together some courage (or tons of stupidity) and decided to do the last hike. I figured I would leave in high note.
The hike was not so bad, but the heat and sun were brutal. I really had a hard time with them. The hike’s payoff was another glorious 360-degree view of the park. I got to do my Spiderman impersonation when climbing the last boulder area. Only part I really hated was the river bottom like portions of the hike. I could not get good footings. I was so very happy to have finished my planned itinerary. I drove off cursing the high temperature. I guess I did not know what was waiting for me in Arizona for the next couple of weeks.

I got up at about the same usual time, too early for my sister. Anyway, I was able to tell her that I am definitely leaving today. I think it made her sad. I was getting little itches to get moving. I am not sure, but there is a little homesickness as well as other little things.
I went and got my car from the paid lot. We put all my belongings in the car. We decided to go to the farmers market on Embarcadero. We parked but no changes. Oh well, today we parked illegally. SF is out of whole dollar!
We got a cup of coffee each. I don’t mind coffee occasionally. It was good to walk around fresh and organic bread, fruit, vegetables, and healthy people. We chatted about many things including my visit, her boyfriend, our family, etc. I was starting to get sad about leaving. I am getting older definitely. Sentimentality, what is that? I bought a baguette and a little chunk of pecorino Romano. I was ready to leave. I drove my sis to where she wanted to be dropped off. It was sad to say good-bye.
As I drove on 101 south, I realized it is just like the previous day. Deja vu! I saw same scenery until I passed Monterey split. It was a good scenic drive, but I was not too thrilled to drive for too long.
I stopped at San Luis Obispo. I read about this place being a great locale. Avila Beach was the name of the place where I stopped for lunch. I had some salty cheese and bread. It was good by the ocean. It was not quite the pungent brine smell, but it was a beach nonetheless. I walked around took some pictures from a pier. I was tempted to buy $5 mussels entrée from the pier. Wow, $5! Fresh from the sea! Alas, I just ate. I saw sea lions (or seals) barking at people. It was quite a site.
I drove to Santa Barbara next. This is where I planned to stay overnight. I drove to the tourist information first. I am told that there is not any campsite or lodging available. I should have made a reservation somewhere. No matter, I still had things to do.
I went to Trader Joe’s to buy two-buck chucks for two bucks each unlike Arizona. I bought two cases. I guess I need to give some out. That is still cool! I changed into my running apparel and ran the sandy beach. It was a little too slanted, but who cares. I was chasing and chased by waves. It was a great run minus still pains on my shins.
I drove through Southern Cal looking for a cheap place to stay. I guess I really did not want to stay in the la la land. I kept on driving for some reason. I drove to Black Rock Canyon campsite in Joshua Tree. It was quite late when I got in, but it was worth staying there for ten dollars. I chowed down Dell Taco takeout before brushing my teeth. I once again slept on the passenger seat.

I went out for another short run in the morning. I felt much pain on my shins again. I am guessing the culprit is my running shoes. I am not sure.
My sister got today off, because her office is moving. Fortune lent us a chance to do something together. My sis wanted to go on a road trip to Monterey. I was more than happy to oblige. We walked over to where we parked my car four days ago.
We drove on 101 to Monterey. My sister is a little speed demon. I kept reminding her how fast she was driving. I think she got annoyed some. I am not sure why. May be she was driving my car or I feel comfortable telling her how to drive. I realized that I was acting a little stupid. I tried not to tell her about her driving, but she did mention that I was scoring how she was driving. I give her a 7! Ha ha!
We went straight to the visitor center for tourist information. I also took care of nature’s call. Mm, I felt lighter. We went to a local Mexican eatery. It was like Chipotle, but chips and salsa were free. Mm, free chips and salsa. The food portions were quite large, but I am always up for a challenge. I should’ve refrained in retrospect. C’est la vie.
We both felt like a nap was in order, so we drove to a park by the shore. I took pictures of sea lions or seals. I am not quite sure. My puny camera with 3x zoom could not capture seals (or sea lions) close enough. I found myself navigating rocks to get closer with my sister’s encouragement. I am not sure but I think she called me names from wuss category.
We took a nap for about an hour or little more. Thank God, she brought a blanket or no nap. It was such a nice sunny day. There were so many people out enjoying a great weather. In fact, we moved the blanket to a shady location.
We went to Monterey Aquarium after the nap. It was quite expensive I thought, but I am already in Monterey. I paid for both of us. It is the least I can do. The aquarium had not changed much since I was there in 1995. It was nice to see such a great aquarium. It was well packed in, but no problem navigating through. Only real bad spots are the kiddy areas. I tried to move through those areas quickly. We enjoyed all the exhibits, but my sister was especially fond of jellyfish. We took so many pictures but it is hard to take good pictures of moving objects. I ended up trashing many of my digital photos.
We drove back to SF using Pacific High Way 1. It is such a beautiful scenic drive. We stopped at a beach area, where many kite surfers out and about. They were using parachute like kites and surfed the ocean. It was awesome. My sister and I watched and walked around the beach for a while. We also found a dead and decomposed sea lion. Ah, the circle of life.
As we got closer to SF, fog started to roll in. Visibility was getting quite bad. That is one way to slow my sister. Ha ha. We were planning our dinner while driving back. I really wanted to get some good seafood, especially mussels. My sister was keen on trying Poufs for mussels, but also wanted to go to House of Nanking. We decided to do small meals at each place. It sounded great at the time.
We found a free parking near Trans America building once we got in the city. Unfortunately, there was a line that was quite long outside of House of Nanking. We walked over to Poufs, a French restaurant. It was funny how waiters were dressed like sea crew from a bad pirate movie. The waiters wore baggy shirts with horizontal stripes. I felt like saying, “Arrrrrgh.” We ordered one serving of mussels with bacon and cream. They were delicious. We used bread to consume the delicious juice with bacon and cream. Mm. I had a glass of Anchor Steam to go with dinner. Double mm.
We tried House of Nanking one more time. I guess Fridays are not the days to try to just walk into the House. We drove back and park at a nearby paid parking since I decided to leave next day.
A couple of hours later, my sister’s law school friend dropped in with her boyfriend. Girls had some wine and boys drank Abbey ale. We chatted about SF politics a little. I did not know SF was a city and a county. We decided against going out tonight. Okay, I vetoed it like a good old man.

I decided to not run today. I often take a break from running. I think I needed a break.
I scheduled a brewery tour for today. Anchor Brewing Company to be exact. Very excited. Last big brewery tour was Coors in 1997, I think.
I need to exchange a pair of jeans, which my sister gave me yesterday for my birthday. It is a little too long and big. It is good when you need to return clothes for being too big. See, girls are not the only ones with insecurities.
After my sister went to work, I began my day by walking to Kenneth Cole to exchange the gift. I got a pair of striped pants. An Asian salesman, who has a rather womanly voice, helped me. Perhaps, I am a little paranoid. I was not bothered by it or anything, but I was annoyed by my observation. Am I not supposed to notice things? Am I a homophobe? Well, who really knows?
I then went to get a falafel from a Turkish restaurant my sister mentioned this morning. It was a little bit pricey at six bucks. It was a hearty portion at least. I enjoyed it. It was not the best or the worst I had.
I caught a Muni out to Anchor Brewing after my meal. I had my first unsavory experience with mass transit in SF. An African American person started slurring racial remarks about Mexicans. I don’t even know how he knows anyone is Mexican or not, but he went on and on about how Mexicans smell. Worst part was he was quite smelly in bad way. No one said anything. I guess no one wants to start a confrontation, but everyone seemed very annoyed by him. I am glad he got off the MUNI quickly. I am sure someone would have done something if there was a physical abuse. I am not sure if I would have acted. I guess I will leave this up to when it happens.
On the other hand, Anchor Brewing was just a delight the whole time. I must say I did not really learn anything new, but the tour guide was a cute short woman named Katie, which made for more fun. Anchor Brewing is a small outfit with older equipment. Katie got around this by saying things like old traditions. Like logging parameters instead of automated recording. WHATEVAH! It was good to see big equipment to make much bigger batch than 5 gallons.
The best part of the tour was beer tasting, OF COURSE! Unlike Coors, there was no two drinks limit. YES! I got to taste their flagship Anchor Steam (70% of the production), Liberty Ale, Bock, Old Foghorn Barley Wine, Small Beer, Summer Beer, and Porter. I like the Summer Beer very much. It was a nice easy drinking beer, which is dangerous. Good thing I am a light drinker. I also like Liberty and Steam. I was also okay with Bock and Barley Wine, but Small Beer has got to go. It was the most horrible beer I have ever tasted. It is made from the second running of the barley wine mash. I got back to the apartment after purchasing a small Anchor Brewing patch.
Another highlight of the day is dining at California Culinary Academy. I made reservation for us, which included Stacy, Kendall, Garrick, Matt, sis, and me. We met up and ordered from a menu of three course meals. I had calamari for an appetizer. It was a little too chewy. I had crabmeat stuffed in lobster shell. It was a little too salty. Lastly, I had crème brulee. It was a little too well torched on top. The best part was again the company. It is nice to sit with smart people and talk intelligently about nothing and say funny things. I cannot remember laughing so much in a long time.
Anyway, Matt had an early plan so the Palo Alto group left after dinner. So we all decided to go separate ways. It was great nonetheless.

Beer: 1 today, 17 for the trip

Today is pretty much the repeat performance of yesterday. I went out for another half hour run. I felt pretty good.
My sister wished me happy birthday when she awoke. She had a first court appearance by herself. It was funny to watch her fuss over her attire. I am proud of her. Not just because she is a lawyer, but making it in a big city by herself. It is like Mary Tyler Moore kind of thing. I guess I have not done so well in that regard. I still have safe townie kind of thing going for me. Parents and friends all live close and always ready to be supportive. I guess that is why I think I really admire people like Garrick, Matt, Katie, My sis, Karen, and others. Enough!
I went to Golden Gate Bridge today. I had to change MUNI to get there. It means I rode four separate buses today. I am getting used to this. I can get around by myself albeit still looking at a map.
I talked to this one Belgian guy, who lived in US for six months (if my memory serves me). He was touring SF one more time before going back. I took a picture of him as he asked. I hope the picture came out to his satisfaction.
I walked down below the Golden Gate Bridge. There was a trail that leads to a pier. I got a better view of the Rock! There were many fishing off of this pier. I thought it was kind of weird. I walked to a location that is more directly below the bridge for some pictures. I took a picture of an old couple for them. I hope that came out well also. I was again envious and jealous of runners all around me. I need to get back to running longer distances.
I went back up to the bridge. I walked the bridge itself. There were tons of people doing it. I saw many on bikes. I even saw a group of people with Texas Longhorn Bike Uniforms. It was a good walk to appreciate the cable bridge. I even saw workers going into the bridge, which was odd to me. I suppose there is an elevator in there.
I went to Embarcadero next. I realized that I lost my mass transit pass once I got off the MUNI. Sh*&! I dropped it in the MUNI. Oh, well. C’est la vie. I cursed myself many times subsequently. There was not much to see at Embarcadero. All the stores at Pier 1 was selling very much upscale meat, cheese, wine, olive oil, etc. They did not interest me very much.
I walked home after that. I was cursing myself for losing the pass. I would been on a MUNI if I did not. I thought walking was a perfect punishment for being careless. I was tired and hungry when I got back. I chowed down some corn chips, cheese, and hummus. I also took a nap afterwards. Life is good sometimes. N’est pas? (You French speakers better appreciate that!)
When my sister got back home, I found out she did well in court today. The case was dismissed, and this is what she wanted. Good for her.
Today, we stayed in for dinner. She made wraps with lots of veggies. I went to the corner store to get some beer. I bought Abbey Ale. I always kind of wanted to try this beer from New Belgium. Dinner was good. Beer was pretty good also. It tasted malty to me with not much hop bitter or aroma. Little peppery?
We were also staying in to watch Dance with the Stars. I know, a reality show? It is my guilty pleasure. I like to watch the short dance partner for Joey. We were having a good time. Ah, life’s little happiness!
I went out for a drink when Garrick and Matt came up from Palo Alto. It was great to see Matt again. I have not seen him for years. We went to a bar where fashionable people were hanging out. I guess I need to do more of this? They bought me a birthday drink. Anyway, we talked and got caught up on our lives. Matt is still very focused and driven person. I would see them again next day for dinner. They dropped me off. Another good day! Happy birthday to me.

Day 16 - Golden Gatae Park

I woke up this morning and went for another short run today. I went toward the Financial District this morning. I made it all the way to Embarcadero. I was still feeling some pain on my shins, but it almost feels natural to have pain. Oh, well.
I decided to go visit Golden Gate Park. I listened to my sister suggest things to do before she went off to work. I think she felt bad she had to work. I keep reminding her that I am a grown-up and I will find things to do. I think I might even felt some relief when she went off to work.
I took my sweet time just hanging out. I finally packed my bag for a trip to GGP. I walked to McAllister to catch MUNI 5. I arrived about half hour later. It was good to get around and get to know a city without getting help. I felt like a big boy.
I walked around and looked at different attractions. I enviously looked at people running around the park. I took some pictures at Rose Garden, Japanese Tea Garden, Botanical Garden, Shakespeare Garden, and Conservatory of Flowers. I really enjoyed the Conservatory, which happened to be free for the day. I made a real small donation instead. It made me feel better. I saw orchids, banana plants, and water lilies. I was quite impressed with this big greenhouse.
I kept getting lost even with a map and took me sometime to get myself oriented in the right direction. I was starting to feel some discomfort behind my left knee, so I just wanted to get back on the bus back to the apartment.
This plan changed once I was on the MUNI. I was feeling FAMISHED! Hmm, maybe it’s time for House of Nanking. I discovered this place when I first came to SF in 1995 with college buddies, Jim and Matt. I got off the MUNI on Market Street. I walked on Kearny to the House. It was much further than I remembered, but I knew it would be worth it. This place is always rocking. There is almost always a line to get in.
What do you know! I got lucky. There was not a line. It was after two. I assumed it was an off time. I got seated quickly. I ordered a noodle dish. I have to say it was the least delicious thing I ever ordered from the House. It was still good enough for me to finish. I think I was hungry from all the walking. Everyone else was enjoying their lunch so much more. Next time ask waitperson for a recommendation.
I caught a MUNI on Geary to the apartment. I was glad to not walk so much after eating. I was sleepy and tired. I read a little more of A Farewell to Arms. I found out one of the character had syphilis. I never read any book where a main character had syphilis. SYPHILIS. Anyway, I waited for my sister to come home, but she was late.
When she came home and asked what I did, I told her about my day. I hoped that relieved her of guilty feelings.
We planned on having dinner in. My sis told me that she needs to comfort a girl friend, who is having a rough time with her fiancé. I think they need to go out and re-affirm their womanhood. You know, go out and flirt, have guys buy them drinks, etc. I told her to go out and have a good time with her friend. I would go out to one of millions of eateries.
I met her friend, who is also a lawyer and from Phoenix. I chatted briefly with her. I accidentally invited her to a dinner planned for Thursday. Oh, well. They went out, and I was left to figure out dinner for myself. I thought of a place called La Pita Loca. I wanted to get a gyro. Besides, the name itself merits my patronage. Unfortunately, it was not open when I got there. I wondered if it was closing for good, as the sign clearly indicated it should be open.
I instead went to a Thai place right next to the apartment for a Pad Thai takeout. I played safe I guess. It was pretty good. When sister got back, we chatted briefly before turning in.

Day 15 - Fireworks by the Marina
Date 7/4
Weather: Sunny
Expense
$16 breakfast
$33 jacket
$10 dinner
$59 today
$740 for the trip
Mileage: 0 today, 3,138 for the trip
Beer: 1 (Irish coffee) today, 16 for the trip
Pictures: None
I woke up first. I wanted to go for a run so I changed and went for a half hour. I went little further than Japan Town on Geary from Leaventhworth. I felt most of the concrete sidewalk on my shins. I guess I am soft now. I felt good afterwards.
We all walked over to Union Square to get breakfast. Of course, we freshened up first. We went to the Italian coffee shop. It was nice to sit, enjoy sun, and watch people while eating your pastry and drinking your coffee. I thought we just don’t have enough Union Square like places.
We were walking back when my sis suggested I check the visitor center, because I wanted to get a week pass for mass transit. I walked down the street where the cable cars go up and down. I got a pass for twenty dollars. I walked back. I saw Capm outside my sis’ apartment. We said goodbye as he was going back to Sacramento for a family BBQ. I think my sis decided to stay in SF. I felt bad, as I know she planned on going. I told her I am a big boy and could hang in SF to meet up with Garrick.
My sis and I drove to a place where we can park free for a week. In the city, you have to move the car so often for cleaning. In addition, finding a spot would be a pain in the rear. We parked near a SFPD station and walked over to get me a windbreaker from a REI store. We walked back home stopping to get a sandwich for each of us.
We waited for Garrick while moping in the apartment. Garrick showed up with a buddy, Bill. We all headed to Marina for dinner and fireworks. We walked up what seemed like a hill from hell. While walking down the street, we came to the most crooked street. You know, where they hold the contest to see which wait person can move fastest without dropping stuff. I think it is called the Russian Hill or something. People from condos were throwing rolls at cars. I wondered what that was all about. By the time we all wished for a ride, we were already more than half way to Marina.
When I talk to Garrick, I do not feel like we live very far away or do not speak often. It just feels natural. It is a good thing. We all went to get Irish coffee from a bar. I forget the name of the bar. The bar was packed. We managed to get in and find a corner where we enjoyed Irish coffee. It was nice, because it was windy outside.
We kept on walking through crowd of people after our Irish coffee. There were seas of people on Marina to Fisherman’s wharf. There were street performers, hordes of teenagers (some enjoying grown-up drinks), tourists, and residents. I really enjoyed walking around looking at different people and talking to Garrick, Bill, and my sis.
We ate at an Italian restaurant. It was okay, but not great. Therefore, I don’t feel bad about not remembering the name. We continued to have chat about things I don’t even really remember what we talked about. It was great nonetheless as we had a great time.
We walked back to Marina to find a spot to watch the fireworks. I must say I was not ready for the kind of show SF put on. I just really regret not having a camera with me. I think the show will stay with me forever. It was bit chilly and windy. Fog was also rolling in and threatened a good show, but it never did. My sister repeatedly told us of how fog ruined or diminished the show prior years. I guess we were lucky.
Again, we walked back up the hill and went back to the apartment. Garrick and Bill came up for a tea, but they soon left. It was a great day.

Day 14 - Jazz Festival and More
Date 7/3
Weather: Sunny
Expense
$3 bus
$681 for the trip
Mileage: 0 today, 3,138 for the trip
Beer: 3 (1 mimosa, 2 beer) today, 15 for the trip
Pictures: homepage.mac.com/cenya/PhotoAlbum52.html
I slept on the floor, as I did not want to sleep on my sis’s air mattress. I felt fine except for the mildly sore ass. I thought I should start using my sleeping bag. Since the paid parking last night was good for twelve hours, we had to move it in the morning. My sis wanted to go grocery shopping. I then obliged. I walked over and got the car.
To the nearest Trader Joe, we went. It was quite a bit larger than ones I am used to in Arizona. They even served samples a la Costco. I think my sis tasted crepe with raspberry, I am not sure. My sis seemed to be a little organic-hipster. I am pretty sure, because she picked organic strawberry over regular ones. My sis suggested making mimosa this morning and who am I to disagree! We picked up a bottle of sparkly and orange juice. The cashier was quite a hottie! It is always good to interact with attractive people even for just a short time.
I enjoyed eating scrambled eggs, little pan-cooked potatoes, and mimosa. I promptly thanked my sis for cooking, hospitality, etc. It was a nice lazy Sunday morning.
My sister said there is a street jazz festival on Fillmore Street. We decided to go check it out. We got on a Muni, which is what a bus is called in SF, from Geary. There were so many people already on it. I mean like a sardine can. I like the imagery. We got off as soon as we cleared the uphill portion of the ride and walked over to the festival.
Ahhh, the smell of street fair! There was an odor of cooked meat in the air. I saw so much food of diverse kinds. I was duly impressed. Good thing, we ate before we came, or we would have been eating the whole time.
What street fair would be complete without free stuff? We got in line to get free soy ice cream. I have to say, “Sometimes you get what you pay for!” Soy cream was not soy good.
We were watching swing dancers when I heard, “Jae.” It was an unfamiliar voice. I thought, ‘Funny, I don’t know people in SF.’ I turned around and found a very familiar face. It was Katie Horton. I am not sure we hugged hello, but it was weird seeing her. You know, it is a small world. Katie was with a friend. I forgot her name. (Note to self: work on remembering names!)
I was a little embarrassed to see her. My facial hair is just an ugly sight because I have not shaven in two weeks and they grow without direction. I introduced my sister to her and Katie did with her friend. We chatted very briefly. It was really good to see Katie, but we parted as they were going another direction.
We looked at swing dancers, listened to jazz bands, shopped around, and came home. It was good times. We moped around the house after getting back. We phoned my dear high school friend, Garrick, to plan the next day. I am glad he decided to come up for the fourth fireworks.
My sis and I waited for her boyfriend, Capm, to go to dinner. Since I showed up early to SF, my sis’ plan may be changed now. We talked about Capm riding his motorcycle from Sacramento. When Capm showed up, we shook hands and all that courtesy stuff. Since Capm and I have only my sister in common, it was natural we made fun of her some.
We all were pretty hungry and went out to a Korean restaurant. My sis and I ordered one spicy noodle soup with seafood and one noodle with black bean sauce. They are something we remember as our favorites. Of course, they never live up to your memory. Capm ordered stir fried bean pods. I hope he liked it.
We went to Thirsty Bear for our nightcap. I had one ESB and one IPA. I think my sis had a manhattan. Capm had a couple of beer also. It was good times.

Day 13 - Done with Redwood
Date 7/2
Weather: Foggy (AM), Sunny
Expense
$62 gas
$12 dinner
$2 soda
$5 souvenir
$81for today
$678 for the trip
Mileage: 390 today, 3,138 for the trip
Beer: 0 today, 12 for the trip

I started touring Redwood ASAP. That means little before six. I really wanted to wrap up the travel and head into SF.
I drove Coastal Drive. There were a couple of landmarks I was supposed see. I missed both an old radar station and a destroyed bridge. I could not see anything through thick fog. It was an enjoyable drive, but the scenic parts were spoiled. That is what I get for being an early bird. In this case, early birds do not get the worms.
I then drove to Davison Road. It was unpaved like Coastal for the most part. I came a nice sandy beach area that was packed with campers. I guess people like to sleep on a beach. I kind of don’t. I dig sand between my toes, but do not like it everywhere. I was hoping to see Fern Canyon, but it was closed until later in the day. Again, the early bird, moi, was denied. I would really like to have seen Fern Canyon.
I was still more concerned with seeing Tall Trees Grove. Redwood rangers only issue forty permits a day for this place. I am still not sure why the limit, but I really wanted to see (may be for exclusivity). I went to one of the three Visitor Centers for a free permit. I was informed the normal route is flooded and I would have to take another. I was given a paper with lock combinations. After making another patch purchase, I headed out to Tall Trees Grove.
I stopped at a roadside payphone. What a find! I chatted with my sister briefly to let her know I was coming into SF that day. I thought I woke her up with the call. C’est la vie! As I drove toward Tall Trees Grove, I noticed all the great scenes of light, fog, and redwood trees. I managed to get a good picture of this combination. What sights!
I got to the access point, where I had to unlock a gate. Of course, I had a little trouble at first. I had to push the lock in and out. More unpaved road! My poor car had never seen on so much off-road action EVER. I felt more shaking as I drove to the trailhead, but there were so much to see. I was most impressed with white and purple flowers that looked like wedding bells. I regret not taking some pictures of those. Once I got to the trail, I hiked down and looked at the world’s first, third, and fifth tallest redwood trees. I did not know it at the time. Trees are amazing, but they did not present any new awesomeness since I saw them in Stout Grove. I came up to the trailhead and ate my salami and cheese sandwich again. How boring! I listened amusingly as a group of people was talking about the wildlife they might encounter.
I got in my car and drove out. I stopped at Lady Bird Johnson trail. This was my last stop at Redwood. It was a nice stroll. I enjoyed it, but was nothing too special. It did have this wooden bridge from the parking lot to the trail. Of course, I took a picture of it.
I drove on 101 to SF. It was a good drive. There are numerous vineyards. I did not stop at any of them, but they reminded me of all those pictures of European farms. Cool. When I saw Golden Gate Bridge, I knew I was there. I took an impromptu picture of it. I paid the five-dollar toll and drove into the city.
The streets were buzzing. I stuck to my sister’s direction and locating her apartment was not too bad. I had a hard time finding a parking spot, and was circling the streets for the second time when my sister appeared. My sister suggested a paid parking spot for tonight. I agreed. We took just what I needed for the night after parking.
As I walked with my sis, I could not help but notice all the smelly people. When I say smelly, I mean that lovely bouquet of sweat and urine. Welcome to a big city! I guess this is what is missing from Phoenix downtown area. While I jest, I am also amazed at the amount of people out and about unlike our downtown area. More on that later.
We chatted a little and went for Thai. Apparently, she never had been there before. Hmm, what a good idea! I had Pad Tai, which is never bad. She had some soup that was disagreeable. Too bad. It was good to see her, but we bickered a little, of course.

I got up around 5:30. Went for a quick run. I was hoping for an hour, but when a steep hill presented itself, I gave up. It ended being about forty minutes. I was happy with my effort.
My next destination was Ashland, Oregon. I was hoping to tour Rogue Brewery. If I was going to stick around Ashland, I might have chose to go see Shakespeare Festival. The drive to Ashland was quite short. I was there in no time and drop in on the Visitor Center. I was disappointed to find out Rogue is not located in Ashland. WHAT? I was certain Rogue was located there! I would not stay there just for Shakespeare Festival. I left for Crescent City, California, where I would explore Redwood.
Crescent City was not very far either. First, I drove to Stout Grove. I drove on unpaved Howland Hill Road to get there. It was awesome to look at trees in excess of three hundred feet. I found out Redwood trees are taller, but Sequoia trees are thicker is also in excess of three hundred feet. I felt the FORCE as I walked at looked at Redwood trees.
I drove to Crescent Beach, which was a nice and long sandy beach. It had that thick brine smell that told me I was at a beach. It was so nice to walk on a freshly packed beach. It was a little breezy, but I guessed ocean side is like that.
I drove to Crescent Beach Overlook after a walk on the beach. The overlook was quite picturesque. I took photos of the shore with big rocks. I found this trail called Coastal Trail. I thought this was a short local trail. I hiked it for about an hour all uphill. I was thinking there must be a payoff with a great view. I was dismayed when the trail started to go down again. I started to wonder if the trail is not going to stop and runs all along the coast. Even so, I have not seen any coastline. I could just hear it. I turned around. What a bummer! I learned later that the Coastal Trail runs all along the Redwood. Good thing I turned around when I did.
I got me one of the last campsites at Mill Creek Campsite. It had all the amenities I needed. I took another shower, which cost me lousy three quarters. It was awesome. I drove back to Crescent City to phone my sister and fuel up. I remembered to fuel up, but I forgot to ring my sister. I drove back to find a public phone. Thanks to cell phones, I have been having a terrible time finding a payphone. I did finally find one, but my sister was not home. I left a message telling her I would be in SF tomorrow.
I drove back to the campground stopping to appreciate surfers in their wetsuits. It was pretty cool to watch surfers. I came back to this great barbeque aroma. It was evident someone is having a great dinner. I ate my salami and swiss sandwich. Mm! I looked forward to finishing Redwood tomorrow and head into SF

Day 11 - Crater Lake
Date 6/30
Weather: Sunny
Expense
$36 Dinner
$4 souvenir
$1 postcard
$41 today
$577 for the trip
Mileage: 85 today, 2,527 for the trip
Beer: 1 today, 12 for the trip
Pictures: homepage.mac.com/cenya/PhotoAlbum49.html
My cliff note says that I got up at six. That seems a little late. I must have been a little tired. I laid out the washed cloth from yesterday to dry overnight. Well, that was a mistake. They got wetter from morning dew. I decided to machine dry wet clothes later, so I put them in a bag.
I drove up to the rim for a drive around the lake. It was a gorgeous morning. It is sunny unlike Mountain Rainier. I was happier not being rained on. I stopped at all the lookouts and took photos of the lake. There are two distinct landmarks on the lake, which are Phantom Ship and Wizard Island. I stopped at the visitor center, where I purchased two postcards and a patch. My patch collection is growing. I really like the way this patch looks. I made a dinner reservation at the Lodge, because they get booked fast. The earliest reservation was for nine. Oh, well.
I was ready to go down to the dock where a boat tour is being offered. I was really hoping that it is happening. I was looking forward to spending sometime on Wizard Island. Alas, it was not meant to be. I was told at the ticket booth that the tour is not to start until the Fourth of July weekend. I was two days early. I took the trail, Cleetwood, to the dock anyway to see what the lake is like. The trail is about two miles long and is a switchback. It felt a little like doing Grand Canyon. May be not. It was a bit of work to climb back out. I wondered if the hike in Mt. Rainier is taking a toll.
Water in the lake is of the deepest blue I have ever seen. It is about 2000 feet deep. Apparently deep water appears blue, because all other colors are absorbed. I am sure someone would correct me if I got this wrong. I took a few more pictures.
I tried to climb Mt. Scott, but it was closed by snow. I really wished I had snowshoes or at least a couple of tennis rackets. I think I could have gone to the highest point to check out the 360° view. That meant I would not be checking out Watchman trail. It was also snowed in.
I came back to the campground. I hiked Annie Creek trail that is about two miles. I walked down to a creek and crossed small bridges. I took a picture of each bridge. I think I have a fetish for bridges. It was a nice little hike. I was no longer so upset even though I could not do some of the planned hikes.
I washed up and drove back up to Crater Lake Lodge. I decided to depart the next day and tried to soak in as much of the Crater Lake as possible. I walked around the exhibits and learned about the lake. I sent two postcards out. I made some notes in the journal. I went to the Lodge and sat in a rocking chair looking out to Crater Lake. Awesome! I typed up a couple days of the trip.
Note to self: Get a nice rocking chair!!!!!!!
I got impatient. I couldn’t possibly wait until nine. I went to the hostess to speed things up. It was a middle-aged lady, who agreeably changed it. I was seated immediately. I did not tip or flirt with her. This is a definitely a good thing.
I order NW clam chowder to start. It contained apple wood smoked bacon and thyme. Mm, bacon! Smell of thyme is evident. Potatoes were soft but not mush. It is a thinner than I expected, but it is not NE chowder. It was excellent.
I ordered Cinder Cone Red beer from Deschutes Brewery to go with my meal. It was light red and did not seem entirely clear. It had a good foam head, good bouquet of hop (not sure which), and good malt taste. I thought it was well balanced with bitterness.
For the main entrée, I ordered artichoke chicken and Gouda cream sauce (w/ fettuccini). All the ingredients were good individually except for the artichoke, which seemed bitter. Prosciutto was good, sun dried tomatoes were intense and sweet, red onion was nicely caramelized, but heavy thick Gouda cream sauce made them just a mediocre dish. It is a shame. I wondered if I should have ordered the special, Denver cut venison. I did not feel good about ordering Bambi. Over all, I was very impressed with the whole experience.
I was making notes of my meal, as this would be in my journal. The waiter asked me if I was a food critic. That was pretty cool. I said, “I am making notes for my records.” I thought that sounded vague enough.
Note to self: Take more notes in restaurants, because they will treat you better thinking you are a food critic. YEAH!
I left the lodge and drove down to campground for the last night in Crater Lake.

I got up at 5:30. I was ready to roll. It was all about finishing Mt. Rainier by hiking Van Trump Trail. It is a trail that climbs about 2,200 ft in elevation. I misjudged and disrespected the change in elevation. I also forgot my camera, which I regret very painfully many times.
Van Trump Trail was all about up hill. It was strenuous to say the least. There were numerous opportunities to take pictures of Comet Falls. I was so pi$$ed at myself. Ahhhhhhhhh! The trail kept on climbing. My heels were burning. It was one of those hikes I will remember I could tell. There were one log bridge to cross (another missed photo), and three logs laid over a stream (another missed photo).
At the end of the trail, I came to a cleared area that showed Mt. Rainier’s peak, Columbia Crest. It was such a Sound of Music moment. It was a great hike. I will remember this sight forever. Of course, a photo would be so much better.
I decided that I did not take enough punishment yet. I walked Mildred Point, which veered from Van Trump for another mile. I climbed more. I think it was about 800 feet. The trail got narrower and plants were more intrusive. My pants and shoes were getting wet, wetter, and wettest. When I thought it could not get any wetter, it got wetter. I got more determined and kept moving. At the end, I was paid with even better view of Columbia Crest. Wow, what a sight! It took me a little less than four hours. It is supposed to take six to seven hours, but I hiked nonstop. I think I will feel this very soon.
I drove off the mountain and headed to Crater Lake. I thought about staying at Eugene or Salem or Bend, but decided against it. “I like to visit Rogue in Ashland,” I thought to myself.
I kept on driving and did not stop until I reached Oakridge, Oregon to fuel up and buy some groceries. I next stopped at Crater Lake, my destination. I had small difficulties locating the campsite I wanted, which was Lost Creek. It was closed. I stopped to ask a ranger, but the visitor center was closed. Shoot.
I managed to find the only other campground. It worked out as the campground had public showers, and a Laundromat. I was pretty happy with that. In fact, I took the best $0.75 shower ever!!!! It felt so good. I also did a load of laundry for a dollar. YES!
The biggest obstacle I can foresee right away was, mosquitoes. I felt their presence almost immediately. I kept my car doors closed after I brushed my teeth for slumber. Tomorrow should be another great exploring day.
Note to self: I saw another Les Schwab tire center. Oregon also has Les Schwab. How interesting! There are Dutch Boy coffee shops. I thought Dutch Boy made paint! Hmmm.

I got up early again, so I decided to get in Mt. Rainier early. I was less than twenty minutes away if my memory serves me right. It was a foggy morning. Visibility was not very good. Do what Romans do … I drove slow and kept the day light on.
First on the itinerary was Groves of Patriarch (Giant Douglas firs). Well I missed it somehow. I decided to catch it on the way to Paradise. So I drove to Sunrise. This is the highest of the three established ranger visitor centers. I planned on doing just Nature Trail. It turned out to be quite easy. I took a side path to Dege Peak. I have to say the name was catchy. There were still snow on the trails that obstructed but I just walked over them. It was not so bad. I enjoyed the hike around Sunrise, but the fog made it less scenic. It was also a little eerie because it was early in the morning and no one else was around.
When I came down to the visitor center area, I found this lonely public telephone. I found this very curious, but I used it to call a couple of people. It was refreshing to use a payphone at the top.
I then went to Paradise, and made sure not to miss the Groves trail. It was an easy stroll with huge trees. It was nice. I came to the visitor center/observation deck area. I looked around and looked at two exhibits.
I decided to have a nice meal at Paradise Inn, the only full service restaurant in the park. I ordered the special, which was a Mahi Mahi Club, and a beer. I never had Blonde Ale by Red Hook. The beer had a color between yellow and copper. It was nicely balanced sweet with bitter. Bouquet of hop was evident, although I could not figure out which. It was very refreshing and quaffable beer. The special was grilled fish, bacon, lettuce, and tomato on burger buns. It came with pesto mayo. I enjoyed this lunch so much because I have been eating meals made by me on the go.
The best part of the lunch came about half way through my meal. There was this bus-person, who was clearing the next table. She took the dishes and glasses, and turned right into a pillar. No one laughed harder than the bus-person, but I was chuckling. That made my day.
It was starting to rain about mid afternoon. I still made to the Longmire, which is the last visitor area for me. I was not impressed with this, but I did see three deer. It was all worth a small drive.
I was camping at Cougar Campground. It was horrible to stay in my car for an extended time, but it was raining pretty badly. I read some more of A Farewell to Arms. I took a power nap before a ranger’s talk at nine. I learned that a mudslide sounds like a train coming. After the talk, I went to sleep thinking I need to get off this mountain.
